EAST HARLEM, NY — Thousands of East Harlem public housing tenants went without water for two full days after a water main broke near the New York City Housing Authority's Taft Houses development, according to the housing agency.

Water service was shut off to nine Taft Houses buildings starting at 9:30 a.m. Sunday when an 8-inch main water supply line ruptured, a NYCHA spokesperson said. Service was restored to six of the buildings, but three Taft Houses buildings — containing 949 tenants — were still without water on Tuesday morning.

NYCHA plumbers isolated the broken water main and are working to repair the pipe and restore water to the three remaining buildings, a NYCHA spokesperson said. The agency set up two water stations for tenants in the development.
