Famed Harlem Arts Center Announces 40th Season: What To Know

Harlem Stage, which is dedicated to celebrating the artistic legacy of Harlem, announced its landmark 40th season on Tuesday.

HARLEM, NY — Harlem Stage, a famed arts center in Upper Manhattan, announced its landmark 40th season on Tuesday.

The center at 150 Convent Ave., near West 135th Street, is dedicated to celebrating the "unique and diverse artistic legacy of Harlem and the indelible impression it has made on American culture," according to its website.

The 40th season aims to be a celebration of the institution's work to provide a platform to both emerging and established artists of color working in an array of forms.

"On the occasion of our 40th Anniversary, we see a process of renewal, facilitated in part by artists acting as guest curators, providing us an opportunity to expand our curatorial vision, and discover the new for ourselves and our audiences," Patrica Cruz, the CEO and artistic director of Harlem Stage, said in a news release.

Here is some of what you can expect for the 40th season slate.

  • Presentations from Harlem Stage's signature commissioning program, WaterWorks. It will feature performances from the bandleader Ambrose Akinmusire, the vocalist Tamar-kali, and emerging artists.
  • Performances by Harlem Stage's flagship dance series, E-Moves, which has brought together phenomenal choreographers, artists, musicians, and dance artists of color to showcase their movement-based creations over the last 20 years. Artists set to perform are Kyle Abraham, Camille A. Brown, Ronald K. Brown, nora chipaumire, and Bill T. Jones.

There will also be guest curated performances, special project performances, the Uptown Nights music series performances, and more.
