This Harlem Public High School Is NYC's Best: Ranking

HARLEM, NY — A Harlem school based out of The City College of New York is the best public high school in the state, according to the 2023-2024 Best High Schools rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College —which operates out of the Covenant Avenue college campus — ranked number one in the city and state, according to the ranking.

The high school took the No. 22 spot nationally.

It's a major bump for the Harlem school that ranked fourth in the city and 38th in the nation last year.

The school earned its top spot on account of its 100 percent graduation rate, 16:1 student-teacher ratio, 100 percent AP participance and math, reading and science proficiency of at least 98 percent.

The school enrolls about 524 students, 71.6 percent of which are non-white and two or more races and 37 percent of which are economically disadvantaged, according to U.S. News & World Report.

New York City schools made up the majority of the state's top performers, with last year's winner, Flushing's Townsend Harris High School, taking the No. 2 spot.

Queens High School for the Sciences at York Colleges followed in the No. 3 spot, a one-spot drop from last year.

Stuyvesant High School took the No. 4 spot, with Staten Island Technical High School rounding out the top 5 statewide.
