HARLEM, NY — VeganHood, a 100 percent plant-based restaurant in Harlem, just marked its one-year anniversary with a celebration, and recognition from the city.

The eatery's at 2100 Frederick Douglass Ave., near West 114th Street, was presented with a Certificate of Recognition from the city signed by Mayor Eric Adams for its participation in the "city's world-renowned dining scene with their vegan soul food and Caribbean-inspired cuisine."

The restaurant was co-founded by Janine Smalls-Gueye and Lanise Herman-Thomas.

The recognition also mentioned the restaurant's donation program, as all VeganHood sales have a portion go toward the nonprofit Young Excellence Society, which the eatery's founders also co-founded in 2017.

The nonprofit provides innovative after-school and summer programs for kids in the Harlem community.

“We are honored to be recognized by New York City for our entrepreneurship and commitment to the community,” said Smalls-Gueye during the celebration. “VeganHood is proud to bring plant-based recipes to the community so everyone can learn first-hand that vegan menu items are delicious and it is possible to veganize without compromise!”

Other people that attended VeganHood's celebratory brunch included Melba Wilson, owner of the iconic Melba's Restaurant, and Andrew Rigie, the executive director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance.

Vegan Hood describes its mission as bridging "veganism and the hood with delicious vegan food."

After success during its first years, Smalls-Gueye and Herman-Thomas are planning on opening another location soon.
