Harlem's 125th Street Openings: Food Bazaar, CityMD

With Food Bazaar's new opening set to alleviate 125th Street's supermarket shortage, CityMD has also opened a new clinic steps away.

Food Bazaar and CityMD both opened new locations this month at 201 and 153 East 125th St., respectively.

HARLEM, NY — On always-changing 125th Street, two new business openings have turned heads in recent days: an urgent care clinic and a long-awaited supermarket.

Food Bazaar and CityMD opened their new East 125th Street locations just steps away from each other this month, on opposite sides of Third Avenue.

Here's what to know about each one.

Food Bazaar

A tri-state chain known for its sprawling supermarkets and international items, Food Bazaar has been moving in since last year to One East Harlem: the brand-new 20-story apartment building on the corner of Third Avenue.

Its arrival has been eagerly anticipated in East Harlem, ever since the 2015 closure of Pathmark a block west left the area without any reliable grocery options.

A supermarket employee confirmed over the phone on Friday that Food Bazaar was open, though its official ribbon-cutting is not happening until Sept. 8.

The Curious Uptowner, which first revealed the opening, reported that Food Bazaar occupies a 45,000-square-foot space, featuring a huge produce section, ample selections of cheese and whole-bean coffee, and special discounts for senior citizens, IDNYC holders and firefighters.

The market is open every day, from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

This is the first Manhattan location for Food Bazaar, which operates more than two dozen other supermarkets across the city, Westchester, Long Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey.

CityMD

A few steps west, meanwhile, the urgent care chain CityMD opened its newest location on Tuesday at 153 East 125th St., between Lexington and Third avenues.

The clinic offers basic urgent care services, COVID-19 testing and treatment — including rapid, PCR and antibody testing — as well as virtual care options, according to the company. Testing and treatment for monkeypox is also available.

No appointments are needed to visit the clinic, and most clients are in and out in less than 30 minutes, CityMD. Most insurance is accepted.

CityMD has expanded its Harlem presence in recent years, with two other locations on 125th Street: one near Lenox Avenue and another near St. Nicholas Avenue.

The East 125th Street location is CityMD's 157th clinic across New York and New Jersey, the company said. The storefront was previously home to The Children's Place clothing store.
