HARLEM, NY — A man has been indicted on hate crime charges for stabbing and shooting at a transgender woman in Central Harlem last month, prosecutors said Thursday.

Alshon Williams, 49, was charged in connection with a Nov. 1 attack that played out in front of an apartment building on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office.

Williams confronted the 36-year-old victim and her friend in front of the building, telling them to quiet down because residents were trying to sleep, prosecutors said.

He then misgendered the woman, called her an anti-gay slur, took out a sharp object and stabbed the woman in the face at least twice, cutting her above the right eye, prosecutors said.

He then grabbed a gun and fired three shots toward the woman, missing her each time, police said. Williams then fled the scene on a moped, according to authorities.

Williams was charged with four felonies, including assault as a hate crime, criminal weapon possession and menacing as a hate crime, prosecutors said.

"As alleged, this defendant hurled hateful words and slurs before this violent attack," Bragg said in a statement. "It is a miracle that the victim was not severely injured – or even killed – and we wish her a speedy recovery."
