New HBO Documentary Tells Story Of Harlem's Apollo Theater
HBO's "The Apollo" — by award-winning director Roger Ross Williams — debuts Wednesday, Nov. 6.

HARLEM, NY — A new HBO documentary detailing the history of Harlem's Apollo Theater will debut on the cable channel Wednesday night, HBO announced. The documentary is directed by Academy Award winner Roger Ross Williams and features interviews with stars such as Patti LaBelle, Pharrell Williams, Smokey Robinson and Jamie Foxx.
"The Apollo" tells the story of Harlem's world-renowned venue by combining footage of iconic performances, interviews with performers who have graced the stage and behind-the-scenes looks at the workers who keep the venue running, according to HBO. The documentary covers everything from the founding of The Apollo eight decades ago to this season's production of Ta-Nehisi Coates' "Between the World and Me.
HBO premiered the documentary on the opening night of the Tribeca Film Festival in April, but waited until November to release the film to its subscribers.
