EAST HARLEM, NY — A teen with a long rap sheet is facing charges for randomly attacking another teenager with a cane sword in East Harlem, police said.

Abner Suazo, 19, was charged with second-degree assault for attacking a 19-year-old on the street near Third Avenue and East 106th Street, police said. Suazo approached the victim at random on Saturday around 1:10 a.m., drew a sword from a cane and began slashing the man in the arms, police said.

The victim, who was not named, suffered cuts to his right and left arms, an NYPD spokesperson said. Police were able to apply tourniquets to the man's wounds to stop bleeding before medics arrived to rush him to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. He's expected to survive the attack, police said.

Detectives from East Harlem's 23rd Precinct tracked Suazo down using security camera footage taken near the scene of the attack and arrest him within an hour, according to police and a criminal complaint filed by the Manhattan district attorney's office.

Suazo was arraigned on Sunday and held on $10,000 cash bail due to prior arrests for assault, according to the criminal complaint. The 19-year-old is linked to assaults on Nov. 21 and July 4 of 2019, police said.
