Uptown Post Office To Be Renamed In Honor Of Tuskegee Airmen

Congress approved a name change for the post office branch on Macombs Place and West 154th Street.

HARLEM, NY — An Uptown Manhattan post office will be renamed to honor a historic group of soldiers who helped integrate the Unites States military, Congressman Adriano Espaillat announced Wednesday.

The post office currently known as Colonial Park Station will be renamed the Tuskegee Airmen Post Office Building, Espaillat announced. The post office is located on Macombs place between West 153rd and 154th streets.

Espaillat introduced a bill in congress that proposed the name change.

"I am proud to recognize the Tuskegee Airmen for their bravery, service to our country in the face of racism, and sacrifice and commitment to the U.S. armed forces by introducing this bill to rename the U.S. post office located at 99 Macombs Place in their honor. A symbolic gesture and tribute to the memory of each of the airmen who served, as no gesture compares to their contributions to this country," Espaillat said in a statement.

"Tuskegee Airmen" was the name given to the first all-black squadron of military pilots. The squadron was created by the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 to fight in World War II and its members flew more than 15,000 raids in Europe and North Africa during the war.
