An Uptown Subway Station Is Getting A Facelift And A New Name, City Officials Say
"This is a moment that needs to be written in the history books," Harlem State Senator Cordell Cleare said.

HARLEM, NY — This Sunday, state and local officials will sign a bill officially renaming the subway station at 110th Street and Central Park North after Civil Rights Movement leader and activist Malcolm X.
The station, which will now be known as the 110th Street – Malcolm X Plaza station, will also get several upgrades as part of the renaming, officials said. The signing falls on what would be the leader's 100th birthday.
Born in Nebraska in 1925, Malcolm X championed Black self-determination and equality before his assassination in 1965 at age 39.

"This is a moment that needs to be written in the history books," Harlem State Sen. Cordell Cleare said ahead of the renaming.
As part of the renaming, the station will get a permanent statue of Malcolm X in the plaza surrounding the station, which was named after him two decades ago.

City officials said they also have plans for a full renovation of the station and beautification efforts for the plaza. The station's renovation will focus on accessibility upgrades and modernization, officials said.
These upgrades will continue the mission of the Friends of Malcolm X Plaza — a dedicated group of local volunteers — by supporting their regular community events and clean-up efforts that keep the space active and well cared for.
"This area was officially named the Malcolm X plaza over 20 years ago and was not given an adequate level of care and respect over time," Cleare said. "This moment is about reclaiming and honoring the legacy of Malcolm X."
To celebrate the renaming, Gov. Kathy Hochul will join Cleare as well as Assemblymember Jordan Wright for a signing ceremony at the plaza, starting at 11 a.m., followed by a community gathering in the plaza.
