On Sunday, the eighth grader at Louis M. Klein Middle School died when he fell from the fifth floor of the parking structure at the Harrison Metro-North Train Station.
"Nothing is more difficult to fathom nor more tragic to experience than the loss of a child. Sunday, June 9, 2024, an eighth-grade student at our middle school, Mark Anthony Giordano, was in a fatal accident," Harison Central School District Superintendent Louis N. Wool wrote in a letter to families. "Mark was beloved by his teachers, coaches, and friends. Our exceptional faculty, coaches, and SROs stepped in immediately to support his family and our students. We have mobilized support for our middle and high school students, faculty, and staff and extend that support to anyone in our schools who may have known this resilient and remarkable young man."
According to the MTA, just before 6 p.m. on Sunday, a group of five children were on the fifth story rooftop of the Harrison railroad parking garage. The 13-year-old lost control of the electric-powered bike he was riding and was discovered at ground level adjacent to the garage.
The teen was rushed by local EMS to White Plains Hospital where he was sadly pronounced DOA. The other minors on the scene were not injured. A preliminary investigation reveals no criminality is suspected, according to the agency.
"Mark was an amazing young man who accomplished so much in so little time. Just an 8th grader, Mark wrestled Varsity at 220 lbs.," Harrison Wrestling said in a social media post following the tragedy. "He was an All League wrestler and a Sectional Championship Qualifier. His potential on the mats as well as the Football Field was unlimited. But most important he was always respectful, polite and a wonderful loving teammate, brother and son."
The close-knit wrestling community asked supporters to help with a GofundMe campaign started for the child's family.
Town officials expressed deep sympathy and called on the community to support each other.
"I encourage parents to utilize the support services offered by Harrison Central School District to help their children cope with this tragedy," Town of Harrison Mayor Dionisio and Town Board Members said in a statement released in the wake of the tragedy. "Please keep the family and friends of the young man in your prayers. May God bless all our residents during this sad and difficult time."
