Last week, Harrison Avenue was the first of the six Harrison schools to host their wellness week this year. From October 11 through October 14, students were learning about the choices that they make and teaching was focused on how they could chose healthy alternatives in an educational and fun way.
The week started with a brisk morning walk around the Feeley Field track with parents, siblings and friends. The first 100 “movers” received a pedometer to track their steps during the day, with a goal of 10,000 steps every day. There were two bake sales that focused on healthy snacks and there were daily healthy tips and daily healthy snacks announced. One of the goals of the week was to count the number of healthy snacks brought to school by the students. Last year’s count was over 2,000.
“Wellness week was a wonderful way to continue our focus on overall wellness,” said Principal Valerie Hymes. “The collaboration of staff and parents enabled the school community to come together in the spirit of healthy living.”
