Election Day: Voters to Decide Key Local Races

Several key positions are up for grabs today as voters will choose, among other things, the town's next supervisor.

Months of campaigning and political posturing leading up the today's election will come to a halt this evening, as voters will now get their say as to who will lead Harrison into 2012.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at in town. 

Voters will decide six open local positions as well as several key positions on the county legislator. The biggest local race, as it is every two years, is for the supervisor position. is seeking her third term in office against challenger and long-time Recreation Department Supervisor .

The race pins Belmont's campaign of creating an improved public image for Harrison against Walsh's campaign that has focused on conservative spending and finances. The two have also debated key issues including the town's MTA project, which Walsh has said will change the landscape of Harrison's downtown while Belmont has said he hopes for a cautious approach to the project.

There are also four hopefuls for two open positions on the Harrison Town Board. Incumbents and will look to hold their seats against challengers and .

Key issues include the issue of spending, which was earlier this month, as well as how to maintain financial balance in the town moving forward. Democrats have attacked the past spending of Malfitano throughout the election, pinning blame for the town's recent financial struggles on the former supervisor. Malfitano, meanwhile, has called the attacks unfair, in front of the Westchester Fair Practices Committee.

Each of Harrison's two Democrats are up for re-election this year, meaning a sweep from the Republicans would result in an all-G.O.P. board. A sweep by the Democrats, however, would give them a 3-2 majority on the board, taking away the current Republican majority.

Outside of the town board, and are each seeking the town clerk position currently vacant following the death of former clerk Joseph Acocella Jr. There has been plenty of debate in that race, as Greer has touted her experience and leadership skills, while Corvino has focused his campaign on his energy and skill-set.

Both of Harrison's current town justices are also seeking re-election. Marc Lust and Ronald Bianchi will seek another term against challengers Pasquale Gizzo and Nelson Canter.
