HCSD Grants Tenure to 30 Teachers

Harrison teachers and administrators celebrated the milestone with an event at Harrison High School's performing arts center.

From working long hours in the classroom to triggering an alarm to leave class when necessary, Harrison's principals had an interesting story for each of the 30 teachers and three administrators honored at the district's 2011 tenure ceremony.

The Harrison Board of Education approved tenure for the faculty members in the spring, but the event held last week was a chance to celebrate the achievements of the staff at Harrison. 

Teachers in New York State can be awarded tenure after three years of service to a school if recommended by their district. It is a way for school districts to retain talented teachers. It is also essentially a lifetime appointment for the faculty members, as they cannot be fired without cause.

The ceremony included a brief introduction from each school's principal, including Harrison High School Principal James Ruck, who received tenure himself this year.
