This Week in Harrison: Five Biggest Local Headlines

A look back at the week of Sept. 12 - 16, 2011.

From 9/11 memorials to an exciting election primry, there was plenty of news out of Harrison this week.

On Tuesday the Harrison Chamber of Commerce helped sponsor a at the downtown. The event was also a memorial for the late Joseph Acocella, Jr., who passed away earlier this year. Acocella, Harrison's town clerk, was an avid supporter of organ donor groups, and the event was also an organ donor drive.

Tuesday was also primary day. Local results included an early victory for mayor/supervisor candidate Ronald Belmont, who from incumbent Joan Walsh.

Other results included a in his party's primary for the County Legislature's 6th seat, and a in the local justice primaries.

On Thursday, led to the closure of several local streets. Someone in Preston Elementary School reported the leak to authorities at about 10 a.m. after smelling gas near the school, authotities said.

Authorities checked gas levels in the area before saying that no one was in danger. Consolidated Edison is investigating the source and cause of the leak.

Finally, this week Patch took a look at a local man whose is raising awareness for those who gave their lives 10 years ago aboard Flight 93. Rich Ruge road his bike on September 11 and 12 for 27 hours from the World Trade Center site all the way to Shanksville, PA., where Flight 93 crashed.

Ruge said he hopes his story will help raise funds for a competed memorial site in Shanksville.
