Police ID Motorcyclist Killed In Islandia Crash; Driver Arrested: PD
The driver was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs in connection with the fatal crash, police say.
ISLANDIA, NY — A man was arrested in connection with a fatal collision with a motorcyclist early Monday in Islandia, Suffolk police said.
Alan Mercado, 67, of Medford, was driving a 2010 Honda on the westbound Long Island Expressway, just east of exit 57, when he tried to move from the center to the right lane and was struck from behind by a 2017 Yamaha motorcycle at 1:12 a.m. operated by Idris Shehu, 20, of Hicksville, police said.
Shehu was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A passenger in the Honda was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that are not life-threatening, police said. Mercado was not injured, police said.
Mercardo was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. He is set to be held overnight for arraignment at First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.
