Man Faces Attempted Murder Charge After Shooting Outside Jake's 58: Suffolk DA

The shooter drove off and discarded the car, while the man he shot was seriously injured, the DA says.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A man was indicted on charges of attempted murder, assault and other related charges after he shot a man twice in the parking lot of Jake's 58 Casino Hotel in Islandia in May, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said Friday.

Nashawn Legros, 24, of Wyandanch, caused the man serious physical injuries in the shooting, Tierney said.

"This defendant's alleged crimes not only threatened the victim’s life, but also the lives of everyone else in the casino parking lot at the time," Tierney said. "That is unacceptable. My office is committed to combatting violent crime in Suffolk County. We will continue to hold those who commit violence accountable for their actions."

Legros was seated in a parked vehicle in the Jake's 58 parking lot when he saw the man walking toward the casino entrance around 10:15 p.m. May 31, authorities said. Legros exited the vehicle, quickly approached the man, and shot him in the chest and stomach, prosecutors said.

The man who was shot is a 38-year-old Wyandanch resident, Suffolk police previously said.

The man made it inside the casino before collapsing and received emergency care from casino staff and civilians before being transported to the hospital for emergency surgery, investigators said. The man survived the shooting but suffered serious injuries, the DA said.

Immediately after Legros shot the man, he got into his vehicle and drove out of the lot, officials said. Legros then discarded the vehicle, which he was not authorized to use, in the Central Islip area in the hours following the shooting, prosecutors said.

Legros was apprehended in Riverhead on Thursday with help from the United States Marshals Service and the Suffolk County Police Department’s Narcotics Section, authorities said.

Legros was charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder, one count of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and one count of first-degree unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Legros was ordered held on $1 million cash, $2 million bond, or $10 million partially-secured bond while his case pends. He is due back in court on Sept. 6 and is being represented by the Legal Aid Society.
