• Newsday's Top 100 girls basketball players for 2025-26 season (newsday.com) — One of Long Island’s top returning girls basketball players is Hauppauge sharpshooter Alexa Fortune, a senior guard committed to Oneonta who hit 53 threes and averaged 17.2 points last season. She’s highlighted among Newsday’s Top 100 as the 2025-26 high school season tips off, alongside standouts from neighboring Suffolk and Nassau schools.
   

• Cops: Teen stole running car with child from Brentwood driveway (newsday.com) — Police say a stolen car with a 3-year-old inside was found on Bretton Road in Hauppauge after an overnight search, with the child reported unharmed. The vehicle had been taken from a Brentwood driveway, and a 17-year-old from Central Islip now faces a grand larceny charge. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Suffolk police or Crime Stoppers.
   

• Nassau violates ICE agreement, detaining hundreds longer than legal limit, data shows (newsday.com) — Immigration enforcement on Long Island is under scrutiny after data showed Nassau County’s jail held hundreds of ICE detainees beyond the 72‑hour legal limit, including many with no criminal record. One asylum seeker was picked up after checking in at a Hauppauge U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office, highlighting how local immigration procedures can unexpectedly lead to detention and transfer far from New York.
