1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge Will Sparkle With 100K Lights for the Holidays

It's a big, festive middle finger to the Brooklyn Heights residents who didn't want the hotel there in the first place.

BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — One hundred thousand low-energy LED lights began to light up the facade of the new 11-story hotel, 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, along the Brooklyn on Tuesday for the holidays.

The lights will be twinkling throughout the holiday season from Dec. 20 to Jan. 8, 2017 from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m. every day of the week, the hotel said. The bougie establishment officially launched its light display in an opening gala on Tuesday night.

The little white sparkles are visible from Brooklyn Bridge Park, downtown Manhattan, and the Manhattan and Brooklyn bridges.

Visitors of the light display are able to write their "positive intentions" for 2017 across a 100-ft. community art wall with Sharpies. The hotel even made a playlist of holiday music that visitors can stream by searching "1 Hotel Holiday" on Spotify.

The hotel opens to the public in February 2017. Rooms are going for anywhere from $400 to over $1,000 a night.

Many Brooklyn Heights residents might see the gesture as an empty PR move after neighbors threw lawsuit after lawsuit at the hotel, including one that was publicly supported by Girls star Lena Dunham.

The hotel won a lawsuit against furious preservationist and activist groups in the summer of 2015, and a judge threw out a lawsuit by the Brooklyn Heights Association in August 2016, saying the court had previously decided in favor of the hotel.

The main citizen group protesting the height of 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, Save the View Now, argues that its height goes against the building height restriction that was established in the General Park Plan and Final Economic Impact Statement (FEIS) for the Brooklyn Bridge Park in 2005.

To see the building in its tall, view-obstructing glory shining with 100,000 lights will no doubt be construed as a big "screw you" to many.
