BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, NY — Michelle Marks, a 23-year-old Crown Heights resident who reportedly worked at the Fornino outdoor pizza shack at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, was murdered outside her workplace Tuesday night, according to the NYPD.

Homicide detectives were pictured gathering under the glow of a police floodlight at the edge of Brooklyn Bridge Park late Tuesday, surveying a puzzling crime scene near the intersection of Furman and Joralemon streets.

Soon, it emerged that an ex-boyfriend of Marks had allegedly been harassing her lately.

A "law enforcement official" told the Wall Street Journal that Marks had filed multiple complaints with the NYPD against her ex, and that her current boyfriend, Samuel Hall, was on the phone with after she got off work around 9 p.m.

Marks reportedly told Hall: “He is here and he has a gun. Call 911."

And according to NBC4:

Marks' mother, Pauline Marks, told NBC 4 New York that her daughter was headed home when she was killed. She said her daughter's ex-boyfriend harassed her after their break-up and attacked her in their apartment hallway over the weekend. Pauline Marks said her daughter was expected to file an order of protection against him Monday but went to work at Pier 6 instead.
At work, someone told Marks that her ex-boyfriend was there with a gun, according to her mother. She said her daughter texted a friend to call police. Marks then left work and was shot while walking to the bus, her mother said.

The department's 84th Precinct said it took a call around 9:30 p.m. reporting "a possible crime taking place involving a firearm" near 360 Furman — directly between Fornino and the One Brooklyn Bridge Park luxury condo development.

Indeed, when officers arrived to that location, they found an "unconscious and unresponsive" 23-year-old woman lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to her head, police said.

The woman was later identified by police as Marks. She lived in public housing in Crown Heights, at the Albany Houses development, according to the NYPD.

No arrests had been made as of late Tuesday morning.

"Michelle Marks was a survivor of domestic violence who took the necessary steps to start anew when her life was cut short, allegedly by her former abuser," New York City Councilwoman Laurie A. Cumbo, who represents Crown Heights, said in a statement issued Tuesday afternoon.

"It is not enough to extend our condolences to yet another family affected by tragedy," Cumbo said. "Incidents such as these must prompt us to take immediate action to prevent future occurrences of violence that have already claimed countless innocent lives."

The Brooklyn councilwoman has demanded more city funding be dedicated to anti-gun and anti-domestic violence programs in NYC.
