BK Heights: Don't Be Alarmed by the Flames Leaping From Cadman Plaza Wednesday

The fire is part of a community volunteer program for emergency preparedness, the NYC Department of Emergency Management said.

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN, BROOKLYN — The city's emergency management team will be lighting a small, controlled fire in Downtown Brooklyn Wednesday night near the neighborhoods of Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO, so don't be startled if you smell fire around dinner time.

The controlled fire will be part of a community emergency response team program, which trains local volunteers from the community in how to safely respond when there's an emergency, a spokesperson for NYC Emergency Management told Patch.

On Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., FDNY officers will light a controlled fire at 165 Cadman Plaza E. in a small street closed off from traffic, as part of the curriculum. The volunteers will have to put it out safely with fire extinguishers as a test, the spokesperson said.

The program is 10 weeks long, and putting out a fire is just one of several skill sets the volunteers learn.
