Here are the top three stories today in Brooklyn Heights-DUMBO:
- There are lots of free events planned around Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO Saturday in celebration of Earth Day. Brooklyn Bridge Park is hosting events from 11 a.m. onwards, and Albee Square in Downtown Brooklyn will be made car-free for the day. (Brooklyn Bridge Parents)
- The rent guidelines board, which every year makes a recommendation as to how much rents should be increased in New York City's almost one million rent-regulated apartments, suggests there should be increases of between two and nine percent. Across the city, rent is skyrocketing in market rate apartments, leading to a flurry of evictions. In one Brooklyn Heights building, all but three out of 28 units were empty. (Brooklyn Paper)
- New York City still lacks a comprehensive plan for addressing flooding and evacuations after both Hurricane Sandy and storm Ida. Officials are waiting on the release of a federal government report that isn't due to be finished for another several years. In the meantime, low-lying areas including DUMBO and Vinegar Hill, don't have the increased drainage capacity they would require to be better equipped. (Gothamist)
