Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn Heights-DUMBO:
- A federal grant will promote `inclusive flood insurance' in vulnerable areas that were affected by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The program, which is aimed at making flood insurance accessible to low and moderate income homeowners, will begin it's pilot project by contacting 50-75 households before expanding further. As a low-lying area DUMBO is at high risk for flooding and was hit hard by Sandy. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
- You aren't just picking a new mayor: there are five new proposals on the New York ballot this November. If approved, the proposed measures would alter the re-districting process, guarantee New Yorkers the right to clean air and water, and allow for Election Day voter registration. (The City via NYC Patch)
- The US Senate confirmed Breon Peace as federal prosecutor for the Eastern District Court of New York, located in Brooklyn. (New York Post)
- Mayor DeBlasio hired three loyalists to join his administration as city agency commissioners. That includes Harry Guttman, appointed Transportation Commissioner in February, who was the treasurer of the mayor's 2017 re-election campaign. A Brooklyn Heights native, Guttman was previously placed on a panel to assess the fate of the BQE's deteriorating cantilever underneath the Heights Promenade. (The New York Times)
