Here are the top stories in Brooklyn Heights-DUMBO today:
- A new Palestinian restaurant, Albadawi, is opening its second New York City location on Atlantic Avenue, after a successful launch in Bay Ridge in October 2020. The owner, Abdul Elenani, said that as many ingredients as possible are sourced directly from Palestinian farmers. (Eater NY)
- Mayor Bill De Blasio said on Tuesday that he was "pleasantly surprised" at the high demand for COVID vaccine amongst the families of 5 to 11 year olds, 4,500 of whom got a first dose inside of schools. Overall, 24,000 newly-eligible kids got vaccinated. (NYC Patch)
- A "Pop-up" magazine is coming to the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House later this month. Essentially it's the live reading and performance of stories by journalists and writers — but it's one time only, and can't be recorded or replicated, making it a truly unique experience. (Brooklyn Paper)
- Monday saw the lifting of a pandemic-era international travel ban to the United States. And that means international tourists are already back in New York City — one of their favorite destinations being, of course, DUMBO and The Brooklyn Bridge. To enter the country foreign citizens must have a WHO-approved vaccine (which does not include Russia's widely-used Sputnik V), and show proof of a negative COVID-19 test. (NYC Patch)
- St. Ann & Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights was awarded a $250,000 matching grant from the National Fund for Sacred Places. That's contingent on them now raising $500,000 in the next 12 to 18 months. The proceeds will go towards repairs to the historic building's tower. (Brooklyn Paper)
