According to reports and the NYPD, Villot had been standing outside the building with a group of people when an armed woman approached, argued with members of the crowd, and then fired at them.
Villot's sister told the New York Daily News that Villot knew the shooter, and was trying to intervene in the altercation when he was shot, possibly by accident.
Wright had yet to be arraigned as of Thursday morning, according to city records.
An online GoFundMe campaign set up by a friend of Villot had raised more than $13,400 by Thursday morning.
