Man With Weapon Fled Officers In Park: Nassau Police

Police say the man was walking around the park with a box cutter, but tried to flee when officers approached him.

NEW CASSEL, NY — A New Cassel man was arrested Thursday after reports came in that he was walking through a park with a weapon.

According to police, officers responded to a call just before 5 p.m. for a person with a weapon at Martin "Bunky" Reid Park, located at Urban Avenue and Broadway in New Cassel. The officers were given a description of the man, and they were able to locate him.

As the officers approached him, police say he ran away. The officers caught up with him after a brief chase, police said. The officers attempted to place him under arrest, and police say he resisted, causing one officer an injury to his head.

The officers managed to place the man — Jarbar Henfield, 18, of 3rd Avenue, New Cassel — under arrest, police said. They found a box cutter on him during his arrest, police said.

Henfield and an officer were both taken to a hospital for treatment.

Henfield is charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
