Huntington-Area Students Discuss Parkland Shooting

About 150 students from more than five nearby high schools debated their views on gun control, mental health and school safety.

About 150 Huntington-area high school students came together to discuss how to make sure the tragedy that happened at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Feb. 14 never happens again.

The non-partisan group SPICE, which stands for Students Promoting Inclusive Civic Engagement, held the meeting on Monday night at the Huntington Public Library. Students from at least five different high schools were in attendance.

The students discussed and debated their different views on gun control, mental health and school safety. However, all students agreed they needed to make sure nothing like Parkland happens again.

Legis. William Spencer showed his support and a Suffolk Police officer discussed lockdown drills and school safety.

SPICE has previously held meetings to discuss environmental issues and immigration, but the discussion on the Parkland shooting was the biggest crowd they've had so far. SPICE is mentored by Northport High School social studies teacher Darryl St. George.
