Huntington Library August Events: Female Spies, Defensive Driving

HUNTINGTON, NY — The Huntington Public Library released its August events slate. The library is at 338 Main St., Huntington.

Event: Savvy Sightseer: Paris & Northwest France
Location: Main Auditorium
Date: Thursday, Aug. 1
Time: 2 p.m.
Description: Take a virtual tour of Paris and Northwest France! See where the Summer Olympics will be staged and wander the same sites as the world’s best athletes. Learn about Paris’s unique sculptures and famous landmarks, including Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, and the island church Mont Saint-Michel. Visit sites important to Marie-Antoinette and Leonardo Da Vinci and be humbled by the images of the historical battle on the beaches of Normandy and inspired by the site of Joan of Arc’s last stand in Rouen. You’ll take away a renewed sense of wonder! Registration required and open to all.

Description: Film historian Larry Wolff is back to discuss the world’s most famous comedy team, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. Learn of their humble beginnings, how they teamed up on screen and later, the sad end to their prolific careers. As the co-Sheik (President) of the Long Island Chapter of the "Sons of the Desert," Wolff will also talk about this organization that honors them. A screening of one of their funniest short subjects will be shown, allowing the audience to experience how they still make people laugh – even after almost 100 years. A large memorabilia, book, music and autograph display of Laurel and Hardy will enhance your experience! Registration required and open to all.

Description: Join Emmy-nominated Filmmaker Steven Taub for an in-depth exploration of the crucial steps to get your documentary film made and seen. The seminar will cover writing, directing, producing, lighting, as well as the essential behind the scenes politics of making connections, networking, pilots, sizzle reels, and finances. Event: Kiss Me,Kill Me: Mystery Book Discussion Group hosted by Donna

Description: SPECIAL DOUBLE AUTHOR EVENT. "The Peacock & The Sparrow" by I.S. Berry, a former CIA officer turned author and recipient of the prestigious 2024 Edgar Award for Best First Novel by an American Author. Ilana will be joined by Lindsay Moran, another spy turned author, who has written the memoir "Blowing My Cover." They will be speaking about spying and writing, including life as female spies.
Stationed in Bahrain for his final tour, world-weary CIA spy Shane Collins is ready to return home until he meets a beautiful and enigmatic artist, but before he can win her love, he is caught in the crosshairs of a revolution and must use his skills to navigate a bloody uprising. Description: "Which New Era Would That Be," By Nadine Gordimer (1923-2014).
Set in apartheid South Africa in the 1950s, this story relates an encounter in a printing shop among the shop’s mixed-race owner, a black trade unionist, and two white political sympathizers, shedding light brilliantly on the complex interplay of social forces in the South Africa of those years. Gordimer was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991. Registration required and open to all.
