Huntington Man Fires Shotgun Into Air To Warn Unwelcome Guest: Police

The man found someone sleeping on his back porch, which led to a confrontation, police say.

A Huntington man fired a shotgun into the air after police say he found a man sleeping on his property on Saturday morning.

According to authorities, the 59-year-old homeowner found a 26-year-old Huntington Station man sleeping on his back porch on Nassau Road, which led to a confrontation at approximately 6:30 a.m.

The homeowner fired a warning shot into the air from a shotgun during the confrontation, police say. No one was injured.

Authorities arrived to the scene and charged the homeowner with illegal discharge of a firearm under the Environmental Conservation Laws. The 26-year-old was charged with second-degree harassment and trespassing.

In May, a Calverton man was arrested after shooting a burglar at his home.

The homeowner reported firing a warning shot with a shotgun at a burglar who had broken into his shed for a second time. An investigation determined that the burglar was actually struck by the gunfire and sustained non-life threatening injuries, police said.
