Man Arrested For DWI After Melville Crash Critically Injures Driver: Police

Police say a Farmingdale man was arrested after a two-vehicle crash that critically injured another driver.

MELVILLE, NY — Suffolk County police arrested a Farmingdale man on driving while intoxicated charges after a two-vehicle crash Friday night that critically injured another driver in Melville, police said.

The crash happened at about 10 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Pinelawn Road and the Express Drive South, according to police.

Police said a man driving a Toyota Tacoma on Pinelawn Road attempted to make a left turn onto the Express Drive South at a green light when the vehicle was struck head-on by a Mazda CX-7 traveling north on Pinelawn Road, also with a green light.

The driver of the Toyota, who has not yet been identified by police, was taken to Plainview Hospital and later transferred to North Shore Community Hospital in Manhasset, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the Mazda, identified by police as John Ankelman, 59, of Farmingdale, was charged with driving while intoxicated, police said. He was held overnight at the Second Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Both vehicles were impounded, police said.
