Huntington Street Renamed After Retired U.S. Army Major General
Nimitz Street was dedicated to Major General Anthony R. Kropp, a long-time resident who raised his family on the street.

HUNTINGTON, NY — Nimitz Street was renamed in honor of retired U.S. Army Major General Anthony R. Kropp on Saturday afternoon, the Town of Huntington announced.
Kropp, a long-time resident of the Town of Huntington, lived and raised his family on Nimitz Street from 1973 to 2011.
Kropp enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967. After Officer Candidate School, Kropp was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Corp of Engineers in May 1968.

The dedication ceremony featured remarks from Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth, local officials, members of the Kropp family, and Kropp himself.
The dedication was "very near and dear to the hearts of everyone in Town Government and especially to the Veterans of Huntington Town," the town wrote.

In 1995, Kropp, helped the town create Veterans Plaza and provided the Army Corp of Engineers to do excavation and prepare the footing for the World War II Memorial and Korean War Memorial.
Kropp continues to be active in the Town of Huntington and has been a keynote speaker at numerous veterans events in the township.
He commanded units at the platoon, company, battalion, brigade and division levels. He served as commander of the 416th Theater Engineer Command and chief of engineers at the Pentagon.
The major general is a combat veteran of Vietnam, Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom. He received numerous military decorations and awards, including the Distinguish Service Medal, Two Legion of Merits, Two Bronze Stars, Five Meritorious Service Medals, Eight Army Commendation Medals, Engineer Regiment Silver De Fleur Medal and the Sign Corp Bronze Order of Mercury.
In 1995, Kropp was inducted in the Army Engineer Candidate School Hall of Fame and in 2008, he received the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
