Funds Needed for Rescued Dolphin
A dolphin rescued in June by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation could soon be set free into the wild. Only one things stands in her way: Lack of funding.
In June, the Foundation rescued the approximately 600 pound dolphin and transported her to the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead. Now named Roxanne, the Risso's Dolphin is now healthy and thriving, eating over 75 pounds of squid each day, and interacting with staff.
While Roxanne is ready to be released into her natural habitat, funding is an issue, staffers at the Foundation explained this week. In order to be freed, Roxanne will require a team of 18 animal care members, a crane, a transport truck and a vessel that will carry her offshore.Â
Additionally, for future benefit, Roxanne will be given a satellite tracking device, in order to provide data on how she behaves after her release. To help, click here. In addition, Roxanne can be watched on the foundation's live camera.

Landmark Restaurant Closes for Renovations
Bollingers Family Restaurant, a Farmingdale landmark, will close its doors for extensive renovations.
Mayor Ralph Ekstrand said he learned that Friday is Bollinger's last day for some time as renovations are conducted. The old-fashioned ice cream parlor dates to the mid-1900's, when it opened as Von Leesen's. Fred Bollinger took over and renamed it more than a decade ago before retiring in October 2010. The nostalgic, 1950s decor included old style booths, a U-shaped counter and soda fountain.
