2 NYPD Officers, 1 Just Married, Killed In Maserati Crash

The groom was driving the rental car at a high rate of speed when it struck a tree and overturned Sunday night.

New York State Police released new details on Wednesday surrounding the crash that killed two off-duty NYPD officers from Long Island, one of whom got married that day, over the weekend in Upstate New York.

It was determined that 31-year-old Huntington Station resident Michael Colangelo was driving the rental car, a 2018 Maserati, at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the road, struck a large tree and overturned at 11:23 p.m. on Sunday in Big Indian.

State Police originally reported 39-year-old Hauppauge resident John M. Martinez was driving the Maserati after witnesses told authorities they saw Martinez behind the wheel as they left Full Moon Resort. However, he was found to be the front-seat passenger. At some point Martinez and Colangelo switched places during the trip, authorities say. Neither Martinez nor Colangelo were wearing seat belts, according to police.

Martinez was married earlier in the day at the Full Moon Resort about a mile away from where the crash occurred, according to the Daily News.

Authorities are still investigating the crash and are waiting on reconstruction and toxicology results.

Funerals were held Friday for Colangelo and Martinez on Long Island.
