Plainview Students Explore African-American Life Through Music
Students trace the roots of modern music.

Submitted by Plainview-Old Bethpage Schools
As part of the school’s yearlong Symphony Space initiative, Plainview-Old Bethpage Stratford Road Elementary School students performed rap music inspired by their history lessons. Visiting artist Juanita Faulkner, an award-winning classically trained soprano, performed African American music from the pre-Civil War era and showed how the historic tunes inspired modern day rap music. The Symphony Space program aims to teach students about art and music, and how it pertains to New York State history. Students participate in multiple in-school workshops throughout the year, hosted by visiting artists and experts, and take field trips to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Symphony Space Theater.
