Shred, Shed, And Scam Prevention Event Coming To Huntington

The event will feature a shredding truck, medicine disposal and scam prevention presentation designed to bolster community safety.

HUNTINGTON, NY — "Protect & Purge: A Shred, Shed, and Scam Event," designed to bolster community safety, is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the John J. Flanagan Center in Huntington, the town announced.

Residents are invited to help residents protect their personal and financial information while safely disposing of sensitive documents and medications. The event will feature a shredding truck, medicine disposal and a scam prevention presentation.

The event will feature three key community services: (Attendees can take participate in any segment)

  • Shredding Truck (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM) – Residents can bring personal documents and confidential papers for secure shredding, ensuring safe disposal and protection against identity theft. This is a drive-thru disposal.
  • Shed the Meds (1:00 PM – 3:30 PM) – Attendees are encouraged to dispose of expired or unused medications safely, helping to prevent misuse and protect the environment. This is a drive-thru disposal.
  • Scam Prevention Presentation (1:30 PM) – Jennifer Cassidy, vice president and senior branch manager at M&T Bank’s Huntington branch, will provide expert insights on recognizing and preventing identity theft and fraud. With more than 23 years in the banking industry, Cassidy is "well-versed in community safety, financial security, and effective scam prevention techniques," according to the town.

The event is free to the public.

Supervisor Edmund J. Smyth, Huntington Councilwoman Theresa Mari, and the Department of Human Services, in partnership with the SCPD 2nd Precinct, are set to host the event.

The John J. Flanagan Center is at 423 Park Ave., Huntington.

"It’s a valuable opportunity for our residents to protect themselves against fraud and securely dispose of documents and medications. With the expertise of our local law enforcement and industry professionals, we can all take steps toward greater community safety."
