Test Scores Coming and Target Gets Ready to Hire

Your guide to what's happening around Huntington.

The New York State Education Department is releasing results of tests taken by students in the third through eighth grades. Because the April tests were based on Common Core Standards for the first time, the scores are expected to drop. Educators and politicians have been warning recently that the scores would fall but also asking for everyone to remain calm. And in fact, The Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday night that, "Overall, 31% of New York State students in third through eighth grade were proficient in math and reading on state exams this year, down from 65% in math and 55% in English in 2012 on different tests."

Target Targets Hiring
Target told Patch that it will run a large job fair next week at Whitman High School, intending to hire about 300 mostly part-time workers. The store will miss back to school sales since it won't open until October.
