Bacteria Scare Closes 10 Islip Beaches: Health Dept.

Suffolk County health officials have closed 62 Long Island beaches for bathing due to excessive bacteria, including 10 in the Town of Islip.

ISLIP, NY — Ten beaches in the Town of Islip are among 62 closed for swimming on Long Island, the Suffolk County Health Department announced on Friday.

According to a statement, the following beaches are closed to bathing due to the finding of excess bacteria:

  • West Islip Beach, West Islip
  • Benjamins Beach, Bay Shore
  • Islip Beach, Islip
  • East Islip Beach, East Islip
  • West Oaks Recreation Club Beach, West Sayville
  • Brightwaters Village Beach, Brightwaters
  • Bayport Beach, Bayport
  • Sayville Marina Park Beach, Sayville
  • Bayberry Beach & Tennis Club Beach, Islip
  • Ronkonkoma Beach

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. Gregson Pigott, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

The beaches will reopen when further testing reveals that the bacteria have subsided to acceptable levels.
