A cleanup crew reportedly found the dead fetus on the plane Tuesday morning, police sources told the New York Post

QUEENS, NY -- A cleaning crew found a dead fetus aboard an American Airlines plane at LaGuardia Airport Tuesday morning, according to news reports and the airline.

The crew made the grisly discovery at about 7:30 a.m. aboard an out-of-service flight at Hangar 5 of the Queens airport, police sources told the New York Post and NBC News 4.

The fetus was between 3 and 6 months along, the Post reported.

The plane in question, Airbus A321, flew into LaGuardia from Charlotte Douglas International Airport Monday night on Flight 1942, an American Airlines spokesperson confirmed.

"As we continue to learn more about this tragic and sensitive situation, we are actively cooperating with law enforcement in its investigation," the airline said in a statement early Tuesday afternoon.

Port Authority police deferred questions surrounding the case to the City Medical Examiner and Queens District Attorney.

The City Medical Examiner's office confirmed in a statement it was investigating "what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane."

The Queens District Attorney's Office said it was investigating the matter.

Just before 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, LaGuardia Airport tweeted about possible American Airlines delays "due to an out of service aircraft" but by noon reported that the plane had been cleared and wasn't expected to further disrupt fliers schedules.
