'Major' Coastal Flooding Hits Sound Shore During Winter Storm

Roads were impassable; beaches, parks and boardwalks were underwater, and in some cases, residents were warned not to leave home.

SOUND SHORE, NY — The Sound Shore woke to coastal flooding with an impact on coastal communities not seen since Superstorm Sandy.

In New Rochelle, seawater flowed far inland at Glen Island Park and a huge swathe of nearby Neptune Park was completely submerged at high tide. Chartered boats floated above Town Dock, which was almost entirely underwater.

Though the rainclouds kept most visitors away from Hudson Park, they would have found the pier below the waterline, with the tide still coming in.

In the Village of Mamaroneck, roads were closed and some residents of coastal neighborhoods were warned by officials to "avoid coming out of your homes or driving around the area."

In Rye and Port Chester, low-lying roads flooded and public safety officials warned drivers not to attempt to cross flooded streets.

Playland Beach is normally crowded with dog owners this time of the year, but it was hidden under white-cap waves that crashed across the popular boardwalk.

The Coastal Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service expired at 1 p.m., and by early afternoon, the seas mostly had returned to the Long Island Sound.

Now comes the dangerous storm packing rains, gusting winds and treacherous driving conditions.
