Police Warn About Rise In 'Check Washing' Reports
The scheme starts with stealing mail in bulk and searching for checks or "fishing" letters from mailboxes.

MAMARONECK, NY — The Village of Mamaroneck Police Department is urging residents to stay alert when mailing important letters.
There has been a recent spike in incidents of check fraud in which checks stolen from mailboxes were altered and then cashed fraudulently, according to police. The schemes are part of a nationwide epidemic of "check washing."
The scheme involves stealing mail in bulk and looking for checks or "fishing" letters from mailboxes. Checks are then chemically washed to remove the recipient's name and the amount. The checks are then made out to another name and in a larger amount, often by those using a fake identity.

Police said there are some simple tips that can help protect from falling victim to this scheme.
- Consider using online bill pay options.
- If you must mail a paper check, use a black gel pen to make out the check.
- Mail the check inside the post office rather than at an outdoor mailbox.
- Keep a checking account balance that is just high enough to cover bills.
- Check accounts frequently for suspicious activity.
- If you fall victim to a check scam, contact police, postal inspectors and your bank immediately.
"Postal Inspectors encourage the public to help keep mail deliveries safe by reporting any suspicious activity related to the U.S. Mail," a USPIS spokesperson said in a statement. "Customers who believe they have been victims of mail theft as a result of mailbox fishing should contact Postal Inspectors at 877-876-2455, and select option '3' or say 'theft.'"
