Pop-up Art Gallery Returns In 2023 To Historic Seaside Manor Home

"Art in the Yard III: Thresholds of Abstraction" will use the stunning Larchmont home as a part of the artistic exploration.

LARCHMONT, NY — A uniquely Westchester art exhibit in Larchmont will trump whatever your plans were in the city before you opted to head for the Sound Shore instead. If you have FOMO, it won't be because you decided to stay north of Manhattan for a good time.

The works of art on display in the 2023 edition of an area pop-up gallery will once again have a remarkable space to compete with for attention.

The BAM Art Advisory, an independent contemporary art consultancy headed by art consultant and Larchmont resident Brooke Molinaroli, will be launching "Thresholds of Abstraction." The opening will mark the third edition of the "Art in the Yard" outdoor art series, created in collaboration with Stephen Moser, a Westchester-based architect. The 2023 exhibition follows two successful exhibitions: Women Artists Breaking Out, and Outside In: Textures and Abstractions, which more than 1,200 people attended in 2021 and 2022.

"The Art in the Yard series pushes the paradigm of the white box gallery to explore new ways to present art in a home and adjacent outdoor spaces," Molinaroli said. “I love the challenge of staging a new show every year, building on past successes, activating different outdoor spaces, and showcasing new artists.”

The group show will include a range of abstract works by museum-quality artists. Molinaroli said that Thresholds of Abstraction is organized around the idea of threshold — as a point of entry, beginning, or tipping point. Art will be displayed throughout the 19th century home, including the interior first floor, the garage, the bucolic yard, and the large wrap-around porch, with the porch mediating as threshold between indoors and outdoors. Bold abstract painting, texture, geometric minimalism, still life, and soft landscapes will all have their place in the exhibition. Each doorway or entryway will function as a threshold, leading to a new experience in abstraction: from dynamic works bearing no resemblance to anything recognizable to others that hew more closely to representation. The show includes both contemporary artists who have been featured by BAMart in the past and artists who are new to it.

As in previous years, Stephen Moser Architects (SMA) has designed the installation. Molinaroli said that the focal point of the design, like last year, is a diaphanous scrim that wraps around the porch, which will function as a marquee, a light filter (to protect art), and reflects the show’s dialogue with the concept of thresholds. Box-like walls created by SMA will be repurposed, leading visitors through the exhibition spaces. Work will also be exhibited on the patio spaces and in the garage. Outdoor sculptures will "activate the graceful lawn," and at night, the walls will glow, lighting up the landscape, house and art, which Molinaroli says will create magical thresholds.

Thresholds of Abstraction will explore a varied collection of abstract art by 19 contemporary artists. Paintings, works on paper, photography and sculpture will be presented in a home environment to create the experience of living with art as opposed to seeing it in the white box of a gallery.

Featured artists in this year's show are from the NYC area, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and beyond: Ky Anderson, Frances Ashforth, Paige Beeber, John Clement, Jocelyn Fine, Rose Frisenda, Jeferson Hayman, Sarah Hinckley, Hue Thi Hofmaster, Mirena Kim, Justin N. Kim, Elena Lyakir, Peter Margonelli, Kate Petley, Vicki Sher, Dora Somosi, Julia von Eichel, Jean Wolf, and Zarebinski.

Artists will be present at the show to talk about their work with guests.
