MAMARONECK, NY — Mamaroneck was devastated by post-tropical cyclone Ida, with thousands of households without power and homes, schools and businesses destroyed by flooding.

Marine units from fire and police departments converged on the community early Thursday to rescue people by boat from homes and cars.

Both the Sheldrake and the Mamaroneck rivers overflowed but roads, yards and slow drainage areas had flooded before that, village Mayor Tom Murphy posted, as rain pounded down from post-tropical cyclone Ida.

The Red Cross opened a shelter for residents who have had to evacuate their home at 1000 Boston Post Road — also known as the Palmer Ave High School gym.

"Many areas and homes, which never flooded before, are taking on water during this unrelenting storm," Murphy posted. "Please avail yourselves of this facility if you have to vacate your home."
