Sound Shore Towns Issue Emergency Alerts Ahead of Ida Downpours

Heavy rains from the remnants of Hurricane Ida are expected to cause flooding in coastal communities on the Long Island Sound.

MAMARONECK, NY — The Village of Mamaroneck and the City of Rye have issued emergency alerts to residents warning of likely flooding as rains from the remains of Hurricane Ida head this way.

In "Emergency Announcement #1" sent to residents at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Mamaroneck officials indicated that the municipality will be significantly impacted by Tropical Depression Ida on Wednesday and Thursday. The village is preparing for between 3 and 5 inches of rain.

Mamaroneck is already 10 inches above the average rainfall for this season, creating a saturation condition that will make flooding more likely, according to the emergency notice.

City officials said high tide at 8 p.m. Wednesday and at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning will create concerns over potential coastal flooding.
