Strong Winds, Heavy Rain, Coastal Flooding Expected For Sound Shore

As communities prepare for a powerful Nor'easter, officials recommend securing loose items and moving parked cars from flood-prone areas.

MAMARONECK, NY — It's going to be another long night for Village of Mamaroneck Manager Jerry Barberio, who will be once again monitoring the situation closely and directing public response from a signature white pick-up truck with amber and white flashing lights.

The National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood warning for the Sound Shore. Strong winds, heavy rain and coastal flooding are expected for Monday night. In addition to the 1.5 inches of rain, 25 - 35 miles per hour winds with gusts of 50 miles per hour are also expected.

The Village of Mamaroneck is recommending that patio furniture and any loose items be secured.

If you have a vehicle parked along flood-prone streets, it is advised that you move it to higher ground. All Village of Mamaroneck parking lots will be free for residents beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday until 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

Village of Mamaroneck Manager Jerry Barberio and the village's Department of Public Works will be out monitoring the flood-prone areas Monday evening.

If Village of Mamaroneck residents see flooding or downed power lines, they can call the police desk at 914-777-1122. Officials ask that 911 be used only for emergencies.

For safety, never approach a downed power line, even if you think it has been deactivated.

Because the bulk of the rainfall is expected during a six-hour window overnight, Harrison has also issued an advisory warning residents of the potential for localized roadway flooding, especially near streams and creeks.

Con Edison said it is closely monitoring the approaching stormy weather that is expected to hit our region Monday night and is mobilizing to respond to any service problems that occur.

The utility said the priority for restoration will be critical customer facilities that have an impact on the public, such as mass transit, hospitals, police and fire stations, and sewage and water-pumping stations.

Crews will then prioritize repairs that will provide power to the largest numbers of customers as quickly as possible, then move on to restore smaller groups and individual customers.

The utility has sent text messages to customers in areas expected to be most impacted, including the Sound Shore, reminding them to be prepared and to report an outage by simply replying OUT to the text. Customers can sign up for text alerts at coned.com/text.

Customers can also report outages and check service restoration status at conEd.com/reportoutage, with Con Edison’s mobile app for iOS or Android devices.

Customers who report outages will receive updates from Con Edison with their estimated restoration times as they become available. Information on outages and restoration times is also available at the Con Edison outage map.
