Crimes Nearby, Pt. II: Phone Scam Incident, ATM Skimming Device Found
A look at recent crime in the area.

The following information is taken directly from the Nassau County Police Department's incident reports. None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime.
Bellmore
• Sometime between 10 p.m. on March 10 and 6 a.m. on March 11, a vehicle parked on Laux Place in North Bellmore was keyed, and the door was damaged.
• Sometime between 10:30 p.m. on March 16 and 8 a.m. on March 17, a vehicle parked on Linden Street in Bellmore had its rear window broken.
• On March 17, at 2:40 a.m., Richard Coleman, 33, of Massapequa, was arrested at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Centre Lane and charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated and three violations of the vehicle and traffic law.
Massapequa
• A man reported on March 9 that his phone was stolen while playing basketball at XSport Fitness in the Sunrise Mall.
• Rocks were thrown through the front window of Wengs Garden Restaurant on 5650 Merrick Road on March 13.
• A catalytic converter was removed from a vehicle parked in a shopping center parking lot on 5500 Sunrise Highway on March 14.
• An elderly resident on Linden Street reported being the victim of a phone scam on March 18. Police said an unknown caller stated he was the complainant’s grandson and was arrested.
Merrick
• On March 15, at 5:45 p.m., a skimming device was discovered on an ATM machine at HSBC, which is located at 2106 Sunrise Highway in Merrick
• On March 17, at 10:25 p.m., Kaitlin McCabe, 24 of Merrick, was arrested at the intersection of Merrick Road and Merrick Avenue and charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated and two violations of the vehicle and traffic law.
• An East Hartford, Conn. woman was arrested on March 21 after she allegedly offered to perform a sexual act for money to a undercover detective at the Gateway Inn in Merrick, police said.
Seaford
• A man on Morton Lane in Seaford discovered the passenger window of his vehicle broken and a briefcase stolen on March 12.
• A 2008 Jeep Liberty was stolen from a driveway on Oakwood Lane in Seafordon March 12.
• A window at the former Seaford Avenue School building was discovered broken on March 13.
• On March 15, Donald Popella, 60, of Seaford was arrested at his home and charged with three counts of second-degree menacing.
• Police are searching for a suspect who tried robbing Bravo Jewelers on 3852 Sunrise Highway on March 21 and stabbed an employee with scissors during a struggle before fleeing the scene.
