During the month of January 2013, all students at Island Trees Memorial Middle School competed in the first ever Advisory Olympics.
Each day students in advisory competed in activities derived from various “Minute to Win It” games. Whether it were activities such as paper toss, teachers count, riddle me this, trivial pursuit, scattered states, got logic, or let’s go back, students actively participated in all of the daily activities with great enthusiasm.
The winner for each day’s activity was awarded three points, second place earned two points, and third place was given one point. After four weeks of competition, the student with the highest score in each advisory were named semifinalists and competed in an activity in which three finalists were named.
For the Olympic finals, the entire school gathered in the large gymnasium to celebrate school spirit and enthusiasm. During the finals the students and staff cheered on three students as they competed in an activity called “Don’t be nervous.”
During this challenge the three finalists competed by walking the length of the gymnasium balancing a marble on an index card. At the conclusion of the event, the three finalists were celebrated for their achievements and accomplishments.
Congratulations to the first, second, and third place award winners:
First Place- Tyler Cardinali, Grade 6
Second Place- Jason Obi, Grade 7
Third Place- Ashley Garbacki, Grade 8
Thank you to Ms. Justine Previdi, fifth grade teacher, for brainstorming this great idea and organizing a great month-long event.
Additionally, thank you to the members of the Advisory Committee and the entire staff for coordinating a fantastic Advisory Olympics. Congratulations to all of the students who participated with great enthusiasm and pride.
