Jonas A. Salk Middle School Graduates Excel Onward

The school recently graduated its eighth grade students.

The members of Levittown’s Jonas A. Salk’s eighth-grade graduating class proceeded down the aisles of the school’s gymnasium in ceremonial moving-up tradition as proud parents and family members watched from the bleachers.

The eighth-grade class officers led their classmates and school staff in the salute to the flag, after which the eighth-grade chorus, conducted by Lisa Levenberg, sang the national anthem.

In his opening remarks, Principal John Zampaglione used Yoda’s wisdom in his advice to “listen to your inner voice and decide what is good for you.” In addition, MacArthur High School Principal Kathleen Valentino welcomed the Class of 2016 and encouraged the students to read at least four books during the summer.

Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes served as a guest speaker for the commencement exercises and imparted to the graduates that their grandparents, parents and siblings are the GPS of their future. Board of Education President Michael Pappas assuaged the students, telling them to not be anxious about entering high school or worry about stumbling when moving forward in life. “Be involved, grasp opportunities and challenge yourselves,” he recommended.

During the ceremony, the administration and staff bestowed a number of special awards in the areas of educational excellence, character and citizenship. The students then proceeded to the podium to receive their certificates.
