LEVITTOWN, NY — Local veterans got to meet eighth graders at Jonas E. Salk Middle School in Levittown this week as part of a Veterans Day event. The Veterans included staff members and family members from the school, as well as some from the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter.

During the assembly, children learned facts about veterans and members of General Douglas MacArthur High School's select choral group performed the "Star Spangled Banner." The veterans were then invited into the school library to enjoy food and drinks. Throughout the day eighth-grade social studies classes visited the library and sat with a veteran, allowing them to ask questions and learn more about the guests. Veterans brought photos and memorabilia as they talked about their military careers and experiences.

The event, the first year of "Take a Veteran to School Day," was coordinated by social studies teachers Robin Insana and Samantha McKevitt .

"The students have this opportunity, which they wouldn't otherwise have, to sit and have a real conversation with a veteran," Insana said. "It's really nice that four of them are in the building every day…it's nice that they now see these gentlemen in a different light. You really see the kids engaged and having a good time."

Students will write thank you letters to the veterans and reflect using the video sharing platform Flipgrid, recording themselves telling teachers what they learned.
