The National Merit Scholarship Program is a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

More than 1.5 million students took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October.  Of all test takers only 34,000 have been awarded the designation of Commended Student.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.

"We are very proud of these students and delighted that their abilities have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation," said Nan Doherty, Principal of St. John's.
