Levittown School Board Candidate Profile: Peter Zirogiannis

Zirogiannis is challenging two incumbents for a seat on the Levittown Board of Education.

Peter Zirogiannis, a Levittown resident since 1970 who is married with two children in the Levittown School District, is seeking a seat on the Levittown Board of Education.

Incumbents James Moran and Peggy Marenghi, along with Zirogiannis are running for two available seats on the board of trustees.

Zirogiannis is the department chair of liberal arts and sciences and an associate professor in criminal justice at Briarcliffe College. His family business is Demetri's Valet, located in Levittown.

Zirogiannis is the current 3rd Vice President of the Abbey Lane Elementary PTA and current chair of the Elementary and Secondary Curriculum Committees for Abbey Lane. He is also a former assistant coach for Levittown North Little League.

"As a member of the Levittown School Board I will fight to ensure that the students of the Levittown School District have access to the most current resources available, and get the best education possible," Zirogiannis told Patch.

Zirogianni said he is privy to the "lack of preparedness that many students leave public school with." He said is a huge supporter of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and feels that over time it will better prepare students for college and a career.

"One of the issues that we face in education is knowing the best way to prepare students for the future," he said.  "No one knows for sure what skills and competencies will be required to be successful in tomorrow's jobs."

"I believe that I bring a fresh perspective to the current issues and trends in education and that I can help to find solutions to our most pressing problems.  My first concern is the well-being of our students," he said.

The budget vote and trustee elections for Levittown will take place on Tuesday, May 21.
